The Land of the Fanns Community Action Fund helps communities deliver projects that complement the wider Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme. In March 2019 The FoDP were delighted to be awarded £3,260. from the Land of the Fanns to carry out the works described below.

Sadly over the past 50 plus years due to lack of tree husbandry and the large herd of deer, the woodlands are in a poor state and some need coppicing. We intend to open up the areas of the archaeological dig to allow in more light and to make it more accessable to the public. One of the groups LBH regularly hires for this sort of clearing work is the Thames Chase Volunteers. They have successfully undertaken much of this skilful work over the years. The Thames group charge £275 per day. We estimate the one acre site would take them approximately five days to clear and replant. The numerous deer (approx. 500 roam the reserve) cause serious damage to trees  by eating the bark. So to preserve 10 ancient oaks, we will purchase tree guard matting and to help replace the damaged trees that have died, we will purchase and plant 15 replacement trees with deer guards. This type of manual work can be completed with only a little training so is ideally suited to our volunteers.
